Operator Requirements
In Alabama, pilot car operators play a crucial role in safely guiding oversize or overweight loads. Before taking on this responsibility, individuals must meet specific qualifications to ensure they possess the necessary knowledge, training, and adherence to state regulations. Below is a list of requirements for the operator themselves, separate from any stipulations regarding the vehicle.
Must posses a valid drivers license.
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
No certification required.
Vehicle Requirements
When serving as a pilot car in Alabama, the escort vehicle itself must meet distinct equipment and operational standards to ensure safe and compliant transport of oversize loads. Below is a comprehensive list of the mandatory requirements for the vehicle.
1. Vehicle Type and General Condition
Properly Licensed, Single-Unit Vehicle
The escort (pilot) vehicle must be a passenger car, pickup truck, sport utility vehicle (SUV), or similar single-unit vehicle.
A flatbed/service truck is allowed if it provides an unobstructed, 360° view in all directions.
No towing of any trailer or other vehicle is permitted while acting as an escort.
Unobstructed Visibility / Clear Line of Sight
The driver must have a clear line of sight to the front, sides, and rear.
The escort vehicle must not carry cargo or have modifications that block visibility.
Mechanical Condition
The vehicle must be in good working condition, with functional brakes, lights, tires, etc., consistent with Alabama vehicle safety requirements.
2. Lights and Warning Devices on Escort Vehicle
Amber Warning Light
Each escort vehicle must be equipped with a flashing or strobe amber light (also called a beacon) mounted on top.
The light must be:
Visible 360° around the vehicle,
Visible from at least 500 feet in normal daylight.
Headlights
Must remain on low beam at all times during escort duty.
Ensures maximum visibility without blinding oncoming traffic.
3. “OVERSIZE LOAD” Sign Requirements
Required Sign Text
MUST read: “OVERSIZE LOAD”
“Wide Load” is NOT acceptable under Alabama’s current requirements.
Sign Dimensions and Lettering
Standard Size: 18 inches high x 7 feet wide
It can be scaled down to fit smaller escort vehicles, provided the message remains clear and easily visible.
Letter Height: 10 inches tall.
Brush Stroke (Letter Thickness): 1.4" – 1.5".
Color:
Letters: Black
Background: Yellow or Orange (depending on ALDOT’s specific directive, but typically yellow)
Placement of the Sign
Front Escort: Sign on the front of the vehicle, or above the roofline visible from the front.
Rear Escort: Sign on the rear of the vehicle, or above the roofline visible from the rear.
If a single vehicle is serving as a front or rear escort (depending on load configuration), the sign must be placed accordingly.
The sign must be removed or covered when not actively escorting an OS/OW load.
No Other Signage
No other wording, signs, or attachments may be displayed on the escort vehicle that could confuse motorists.
4. Communication Requirements
Two-Way Radio
Escort vehicles must maintain continuous two-way radio communication with:
The oversize/overweight transport vehicle,
Any additional escort vehicle(s), and
Law enforcement escort (if applicable).
Cell Phone or Electronic Device Usage
Non-emergency cell phone use is prohibited during active escort, except when used to relay hazard or safety information directly related to the OS/OW move.
No texting or other handheld device use is allowed while driving.
5. Operational Rules for Escort Vehicles
Headlights On
Keep headlights on low beam (day or night) for increased visibility.
Position on the Road
For front escorts, lead the load at a safe distance, scanning for hazards and alerting oncoming traffic.
For rear escorts, follow the load at a safe distance to warn approaching traffic and help with lane changes or turns.
Compliance with Alabama Traffic Laws
The escort driver must follow all general traffic laws (e.g., speed limits, signals, signage).
If law enforcement escorts are present, follow their direction at all times.
Escort Placement by Load Dimension
Alabama sets specific rules for when front or rear escorts are required based on the load’s width, length, and overhang.
Always refer to the permit conditions for exact escort requirements (e.g., if the load is over 12 feet wide or 105 feet long, etc.).
When Required
In Alabama, the need for a pilot escort is determined by specific dimension thresholds for oversize loads. When a load exceeds these width, height, or length limits, a pilot car is legally required to ensure the safety of all roadway users and to prevent property damage. Below is a summary of the dimension-based criteria that mandates a pilot escort.
Police Requirements
Although not every state mandates a law enforcement escort, Alabama may require one under certain conditions. Typically, extremely large or heavy loads that present a heightened safety risk or involve complex routing can necessitate police support. Always verify with state regulations and local authorities to determine when a law enforcement escort is required for your oversize or overweight shipment.
